I have been using twitter since 2008 and it never ceases to amaze how much I continue to learn and how I love to connect with others. This weekend I participated in a few #RSCON3 sessions. RSCON or "The Reform Symposium" is an online conference organized by educators for educators. With the more than 75 sessions and 12 keynote presentations there was something for everyone!
I love that although I've changed teaching positions I can still find applicable sessions for me.
My world was first rocked in 2007 when I stumbled across something called the k12onlineconference. I remember watching session after session and I couldn't quench my thirst for learning. I eventually went back through the archives to watch and learn from every presentation. I honestly believe I have learned more professionally online from educators around the world more than I have in any workshop I've ever attended in person. That speaks to the power of the people! It's not the internet that makes it great - it's all the great people that I follow.
I have changed teaching positions over the years. This blog marks another change in my career. I am going back to my roots to teach primary aged students. Grade 1 here I come!

Reading during dreary weather . . .
The summer hasn't been a memorable one for beautiful weather. It's actually going down in the record books for being cold, wet and dreary. I've found myself inside on more than one occasion longing to enjoy some summer heat.
I've been passing the time by staying connected with "my peeps" on twitter and have downloaded two professional books onto my ipad - the Cafe and Daily 5.

Somehow, despite my best intentions, I've missed "chats" on twitter that I had told myself not to. I'm hoping to stay connected with grade 1 teachers using #1stchat as a hashtag, as well as the #daily5 crew that have given me so much inspiration. Thankfully I can always go back and see what has been archived.
I have so many things I hope to accomplish with my new classroom. I want to create a "team-teaching" time with another grade 1 class. I want to have a teacher blog and students demonstrating their learning on their own pages. I want to bring in my ipad, ipod, and laptop for students to use during class time. I want to create independent learners with the daily 5. I want to create an atmosphere that I love to come (as well as my students) each and every day.I have to remember to not run myself dry!

Summer Learning
My learning never stops. Summer holidays are in full swing and yet I have been constantly looking to learn as much as I can. Changing positions over the years has always rejuvenated my passion for teaching and ignited my passion for learning.
I am heading back into the classroom after 4 years of being a teacher-librarian. While I enjoyed my time in the library working with all the students I longed to have my "own" classroom again. I especially craved going back to my roots in primary education. I have now been given the opportunity to move and look out Grade 1 here I come!
Once I found out I'd be heading back into the classroom I grabbed a book called "The Daily 5: Fostering Literacy Independence in Elementary grades" by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser and began devouring it.

I would love nothing more than to create an atmosphere in my classroom that fosters independence and inquiry within my students. I want them to be able to be motivated learners. The daily 5 provides a framework to help create those desires I wish to create.
Rather than begin this daily 5 journey alone I reached out to local district friends and colleagues and found a few that utilize some aspects of the framework. Although, I haven't encountered anyone that has fully implemented it within their classrooms. In my quest to find colleagues, I looked to see what my school district was offering and I found a workshop. I signed up for a PD session in February 2012 - 8 months away. Despite this, I still crave more! When I begin something, I try to learn as much as possible to I can set things up for success.
Thankfully my twitter network and twitter searching abilities paid off in my quest to learn as much as I can about the Daily 5. If you are an educator and haven't harnessed the ability of technologies, like twitter, you are truly missing out. I have found a number of educators who have embraced and are embracing the Daily 5 within their classrooms. Have a look here to read and learn the latest about the Daily 5 on twitter here.
I look forward to the upcoming Daily 5 chats and learning from other educators!
